SUMMARY:
One night, the narrator cannot sleep and paces about his room. Roderick knocks on his door in a strange state and he leads the narrator to the window where they see a bright looking gas which envelopes the house. The narrator tries to calm down Roderick by reading to him and he picks the closest book to hand. While reading the book he hears noises that seem to correspond to the descriptions in the tale. At first he ignores these sounds, but as they keep coming and become more distinct he can no longer pretend that they aren't happening. He also notices that Roderick has slumped over in his chair and is muttering very quietly to himself. The narrator goes to his friend and listens to Roderick. He mutters that he has heard "Her" for days and believes that Madeline was buried alive and is now coming to hunt him down. The door opens just as Roderick says that his sister is standing behind it and she charges her brother where she has her last breath drained from her, and he dies of fright. The narrator flees the house, hoping that nothing happens to him in the aftermath. As he escapes the House of Usher collapses into the lake surrounding it...
